Sgt. Mike Gargan and Officer Ken Vencak were awarded April's Cop of the Month at this month's meeting of the 102nd Precinct Community Council for their part in thwarting a home robbery on Atlantic Avenue, just off 100th Street.
On Tuesday, March 24th at approximately 10:00 PM, 3 males knocked on the door of a residence and when someone answered, they forced their way inside brandishing a gun (which later proved to be fake). They were looking for money and/or a safe that was purported to contain money. They tied up the 3 occupants of the home - a 44-year old woman and her daughter, and a 29-year old man who was living in the house. Another daughter returned home during the robbery, and she was also tied up.

The male occupant of the home managed to free himself and chased one of the robbers, while the other two fled in a vehicle. Sgt. Gargan and Officer Vencak, working in the plain clothes anti-crime unit that evening, pursued the suspect and apprehended all three. Many thanks to Mike Gargan and Ken Vencak (and all of the 102nd Precinct) for their continued outstanding work in keeping Woodhaven safe. Here is some video from the presentation of the award by Captain McEvoy:
