Progress on 96th Street

Back in February (02/12/09), a 5-alarm fire swept through a row of houses on 96th Street in Woodhaven.  Over 200 firefighters were called to the scene.  We were on the scene and filed a report which can be seen here.

It was a wicked fire -- fueled by a tremendous wind -- and the fire company did their best to stop it from spreading.

But despite their best efforts, the corner house was engulfed in flames, completely destroying the top floor, along with almost a dozen other houses.

But over the last 6 months, progress has been made.  Here was that same corner house back in June:

And here is that very same corner house today, at the beginning of August:

It's really coming along, isn't it?  Looks like new.  But there's still a lot of work ahead if this picture of the rest of the block is any indication.

We are looking forward to all of the plywood coming down.  And when it does, we'll be there to show you how this block -- once the victim of a  brutal fire -- has emerged from the ashes, brand new and ready for the future.
