Flag Day is celebrated every June 14th - a commemoration of the date our flag was adopted by our country in 1777. It was officially established as "Flag Day" in 1949. And it has been on this day, historically, that people make sure they have the flag flying in front of their house. And so, on this day, we figured that we had an easy project -- our intention was to travel around Woodhaven, taking pictures of all the pretty displays of flags.
Folks, it's sad to report that there weren't many flags flying. That's not to say there wasn't a flag here or there -- there was. But, for the most part, what you saw was a single house here and a single house there. So, we took the easy route and went to the spots we knew there'd be a flag flying. So, it's a little bit of a disappointing report we bring you today -- but we did want to bring you pictures of Old Glory flying in Woodhaven on Flag Day, and here's what we found.
You've got to give the powers-that-be a tip of the hat for this -- there are flags flying along Jamaica Avenue year round. On the light poles -- 3 or 4 on every block -- our flag is always on display. Here are two, facing each other, on the corner of 89th Street.
Then we stopped off at Forest Parkway, at the memorial, to take this picture of the flagpole.
And directly across the street, the flag was flying in front of Woodhaven's Post Office.
Further along Forest Parkway, we stopped at the Woodhaven Library.
Then it was off to the park. We missed the flagpole - but we got this flag hanging in the bandshell.
Then, we headed over to Whiting Square, at 84th Street and 91st Avenue. The sun was in its' descent, so we had a few more stops before we headed off for home.
Here is our flag flying in front of PS 60. Notice the scaffolding at the right -- it appears that some construction is underway.
And the flag flying over Woodhaven Boulevard, atop the bank. This is probably the highest flying flag in Woodhaven.
And the last stop, before we went home, was St. Thomas the Apostle.
It was nice seeing the flag flying today - even though it was primarily flying in locations where you would usually find it flying. But we will admit we were disappointed to see so few houses with flags on display.
