Project Woodhaven After 8 Months . . .
Project Woodhaven officially launched on October 3rd, 2008, making us just 8 months old. We started off a little slow, before finding our legs early this year and we've been growing ever since. Here's our most recent stat report, showing how we've continued to grow, month-to-month:
While we're real happy with the progress we've made -- we still have lots of work ahead of us. Our Woodhaven Wiki -- an effort to build a history of Woodhaven, particularly Jamaica Avenue, is still in its' infancy. We've gathered 1941 Tax Photos for about 145 stores on Jamaica Avenue -- leaving us with about 200 more to get. And, just last month, we heard that the 1981 tax photos will soon be available. Looks like we have lots of trips to the city ahead of us!
And coming very soon, we'll be introducing a weekly radio show, over the web -- you'll be able to listen to it live -- call in and speak -- or participate in a live online chat room. As always, we'll do our best to bring you the latest news and highlights of what's happening in your favorite neighborhood. Some highlights:
The first event we covered was the 2008 Street Fair - the coverage was pretty crude, but it got our feet wet and we were off and running.
Then, in January, a pesky snow storm blanketed Woodhaven and we took to the road and made out first video report. Looks cold, doesn't it?
Then came two stories that ended up introducing us to a lot of people -- both sad stories. First was the final days of Jason's Toy Store:
And the next was the horrible fire on 96th Street which destroyed 12 houses:
But it hasn't been all bad weather and bad news -- we've covered restaurant openings, and community gatherings and meetings, and we've walked from one end of Woodhaven to the other. If you're new to the site -- be sure to catch up with what you've missed at our News Archives and our Project Archives.
And as a final note, we'd like to thank everyone who have passed along their good wishes and kind words. Your encouragement and participation has meant a great deal to us. We'd also like to thank our Facebook friends, Jude and Armin, who have helped us spread the word -- and if you're on Facebook, have a look at our Facebook Group. And a special thanks of gratitude to our friends on the Woodhaven Yahoo Group -- folks like Jim, Bob, Pat, Mary-Jo, Pat -- and of course, our moderator, Helen. They are a great bunch of people -- and a great source of information about Woodhaven. We've been very blessed over the last 8 months to meet a terrific group of people here in Woodhaven who are doing great work, and make it the special place that it is -- Maria Thomson, Vance Barbour and the rest of the WRBA and GWDC. And a final thanks to Joe Virgona and Bobby Shears, two of Project Woodhaven's very special contributors.
Thanks again to all,
Edward Wendell, Ramon Olivier IV, and Josephine Wendell
