Late last year, one of Woodhaven's institutions -- The Forest View Restaurant -- served their last meal and closed their doors for good. The Forest View had served Woodhaven for decades -- many residents celebrated birthdays there, or their anniversaries, and for others, it was a friendly place to regularly take their meals. Before we move on to current events, let's take one last moment to remember the Forest View. A brief note of trivia, this was originally two separate establishments. The lot on the right, where you walk in the front door, was called James' Restaurant. And the lot on the left was a bar called Fischetti's.
When the Forest View closed, many people wondered what was going to take its' place. And just a few weeks later, they were very happy to learn that a new restaurant was going to take it's place. And that new restaurant, The Avenue Diner, opens its' door to the public at 6 AM on Monday, March 23rd, 2009. We at Project Woodhaven were very happy to get a sneak peek at the new place at a grand opening party held the day before they opened.
They have done a wonderful job inside -- it's bright and clean and new. And yet, it retains the same comfortable feel that existed before. We were met at the door by the hostess, Alexandra, and she introduced us to her family. They are very warm and friendly and have decades of experience in the restaurant business.
They are open seven days a week, from 6 AM to 10 PM. They do deliver, and you can call them at (718) 441-0582. Or, if you prefer, you can fax in an order at (718) 441-0617. They have a large variety of meals to choose from - click here to look at their menu. They also cater parties and are used to handling large events.
There was a nice moment where a Greek Orthodox Priest performed a blessing to bring the proprietors good luck on their new venture, but to also wish peace and health and harmony on all who enter this establishment.
We brought our video camera along and filed this report:
The kitchen has been overhauled and, as Alexandra mentioned, a pizza oven installed. I like the idea of being able to order pizza in a diner -- it's a nice idea. My wife had the Seafood Alfredo (below). I had my favorite, a big cheeseburger and fries and it was delicious (and it was mostly gone by the time I thought of taking a picture of it).
And finally, there were all sorts of tempting items on the menu for desert. All items are prepared on-premises.
The family is very excited to be in Woodhaven and they report that everyone has been very friendly and welcoming to them. We welcome them to the community and wish them the very best of luck and hope for many years of success.
