It's always good to see new businesses opening on Jamaica Avenue, certainly better than seeing businesses close. Recently, we've seen a lot of both -- old friends closing, but being replaced by new businesses. In some cases, it seems to be nothing more than a change in name and a new awning. Other times it involves a complete remodeling. This will be an ongoing series, intended to keep you up to date with that changing face of Jamaica Avenue.
Starting us off this time is Maximo City, a "Furniture and Mattress Warehouse" at 84-04 Jamaica Avenue (below, right). Up until a few months ago, this was Iveria Furniture.
Next up is the grand opening of Jessica Beauty Island, at 86-09 Jamaica Avenue, replacing Beauty Island 2000.
This has long been the site of a beauty store. For decades in Woodhaven, this was the home for Mme. Weiss Beauty Salon (below).
Moving along to the corner of 88th Street, we come across the Jamaica Express Deli, replacing Superior Markets, which we previously reported on here. Below we have an interesting comparison of this corner lot, 2009 on the left and 1941 on the right when it appears to have been a women's clothing store. Notice the facade atop the building - somewhere over the years a portion of that was removed, leaving only the corner section. There's also a rectangular design in the bricks on each side at the corner.
A few doors down, we see that the Interboro Medical Care center has been split up into Sterling Optical and the Big Apple Health Center.
Below is an updated picture of the Jamaica Gourmet Deli (corner of 89th Street), which we previously reported on here. This deli hasn't opened yet but, as you can see, they're working on it. This was formerly the home of Frankie & Johnny's, Paddywack's, Mom's Bar and, most recently, the Haven Smoothie Cafe.
The following picture comes to us courtesy of David Quintana of the Lost in the Ozone blog - a picture of the Avenue Diner which, as you can see by the sign, is coming soon. The Avenue Diner, at 91-06 Jamaica Avenue, replaces longtime Woodhaven resident, The Forest View.
Near Woodhaven Boulevard, we noticed a new sign (below, right), but it's an old business. The old sign looked to be fairly new, as well, so perhaps it changed hands.
And wrapping up this session of changes is a new Sporting Goods store which appears to be opening soon on 94th and Jamaica. This was, up until a few months ago, a beauty salon.
That wraps up this edition of changes. If you have any comments, or would like to suggest other projects, drop us a line at info@projectwoodhaven.com or projectwoodhaven@aol.com .
