March waltzed into Woodhaven like a lion and left behind a mound of snow and ice. The snow began on Sunday Evening (03/01) around 8 PM and by morning there was around 8 inches on the ground. Project Woodhaven kept and eye on the storm and rolled around the neighborhood to see how everyone was coping. Here is our report:
8 inches of snow was followed up by frigid temperatures turning the white, fluffy stuff into hard ice. A day or two later, cars were still covered as were bushes and trees.
While it may look nice, it can wreak havoc on gutters. Rolling around Woodhaven this week we saw large icicles like the below all over. As the sun hits them and they begin to melt, they'll eventually fall away, but you need to hope for 2 things. First, that it doesn't pull any of your house with it. And secondly, that no one is standing beneath it!
In the days after after a storm, the piles of snow begin to turn ugly, especially on roads with a lot of traffic. Mix in the garbage that has yet to be collected and it starts to look real ugly.
Some of those piles of snow have a mind of their own and seem to migrate out into the street.
Overall, however, you need to give the city high marks all around for clearing the streets. The same can be said for the shop owners on Jamaica Avenue. Granted, the sun had a little bit to do with it, but it's still below 30 degrees here in Woodhaven and the streets and sidewalks are pretty clear.
And with the temperatures expected to climb to around 50 by the weekend, this storm will be nothing but a memory in a few days. Over the next few days the streets will be soaked as piles of snow melt away.
