This weekend, our country will celebrate Memorial Day -- and we'll all have a 3-day weekend. Across the country -- in all of your neighborhoods -- wherever you're currently living -- different groups and organizations will have remembrance ceremonies... but here's what we did here in Woodhaven.... Our ceremony began around 6:30 PM at Forest Park Plaza, at the intersection of Forest Parkway and Jamaica Avenue.
The flag was presented by Chief Master Sgt. Jose Silvera and the Franklin K. Lane High School Air Force Junior ROTC Color Guard.
Many residents of Woodhaven turned out to honor the flag, our veterans and, most importantly, those that gave everything.
Maria Thomson and Audrey Pheffer spoke to the crowd that had gathered . .
As did Elizabeth Crowley and Eric Ulrich . . .
Sgt. Sean McCabe, who most recently served in Iraq, had the honor of delivering the wreath.
Sgt. McCabe, and John Seminerio addressed the assembled gathering.
Here is our video report of the evening's festivities:
And lastly, all of the veterans and speakers gathered together for a special picture.
Below, at left, the veterans gather for a picture. At right, one of the vets enjoys the Queens Chronicle.
Here's a good friend of Project Woodhaven -- and a dear friend of Woodhaven -- our very own Joe Virgona.
And, at last, it was time to wrap up the ceremony . . . and put the flag away . . .
And at the end of all the speeches, and the gatherings, and the talking and the meetings and the greetings . . . the monument stood tall and the flag was still there . . .
Memorial Day Weekend is still ahead of us -- there will be a ceremony on Monday at the American Legion Hall, right behind PS 60 beginning at 11 AM. All are welcome to attend.
