Review:  Changes About Town

As we said in Part One of this Update, it was too long for one page.  We'll start off Part Two with this location, at 80th Street and Jamaica Avenue.  Recently, this was the location of a clothing store named Valerie's.  According to a St. Thomas' Church Bulletin from 1956, this was formerly the home of Joe Harrison Meats.  Earlier this year we watched as an interesting new storefront was crafted.

And here we are, the finished product, Ego Outfitters.  Check out that Knight in Shining Armor!  That's a lovely addition to our business district.

Near the corner of 85th and Jamaica, across from Scaturro's, was a nice little butcher shop named Sebastain Meat.  That closed up shop late in the summer and was quickly replaced by Dominican Power Barber Shop

This next one on 90th Street is a little interesting; this was Jamaica Cleaners when I worked across the street at Phil's back in the 80s.  They've changed named a few times over the past year.  First, it was La Casa Del Pandebono:

Then it was La Abundancia (with a brand new store front and windows, as well).  And most recently, it changed again to La Gitana.

Here's a change on 79th Street -- a new 99 cent store, replacing a furniture store.

And finally, this lot at the corner of 97th Street has been empty for many years.  According to our handy 1980's guide, this was an Electronics and TV Repair Shop.  I grew up nearby and seem to recall this being a luncheonette.  In any event, this place is undergoing renovations -- we were inside recently and we'll be posting a story about this new shop soon.  But we will say that they are doing an outstanding job -- and it's looking beautiful!

That's all for now.  If you have any comments, or would like to suggest other projects, drop us a line at info@projectwoodhaven.com or projectwoodhaven@aol.com
