On Sunday, November 1st, Mike Miller was sworn in as New York State Assemblyman for District 38, of which Woodhaven is part of. The ceremony was held at Intermediate School 77 on Seneca Avenue in Ridgewood. We got there early and found Mr. Miller out in the hallway, greeting everyone that came in. This, after getting to know Mike over the past few months, didn't surprise us. He's been very accessible, open and friendly -- and any meeting or event that's been held in Woodhaven, he's attended. Sen. Joe Addabbo was also there to meet and mingle with the guests.
The Presentation of Colors was handled by the Air Force Junior ROTC, Elite Color Guard from Franklin K. Lane High School. We've seen them at a few events over the last year and they've been marvelous each and every time.
The auditorium began filling up early. And the Boy and Girl Scouts were on hand to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
The crowd perked up as the speakers began to arrive. Congressman Joe Crowley and Senator Chuck Schumer mingled on and off stage.
Elizabeth Crowley (NY City Council) and Congressman Anthony Weiner were also on hand. Elizabeth had a packed schedule as she was in the midst of a campaign, which she would win 2 days after this. No wonder she's smiling!
Here's Sen. Schumer speaking with Mr. Miller's grandchildren, who were in the front row. One reason these events are fun is to see different folks and how they act in a relaxed environment, such as this.
Pretty soon, everyone began to settle down. It was a nice lineup of speakers, as you can see -- and they were joined by 2 other members of the NY State Assembly, Rory Lancman and Elizabeth Nolan.
The opening remarks were delivered by Robert Monahan of The Greater Ridgewood Youth Council and the program got underway, with the colors, the National Anthem, and the Pledge.
One by one, the speakers took the stage and told us about Mike Miller, our new Assemblyman. Below, Sen. Schumer delivers his remarks.
If you've missed this event, we were there with our cameras and bring you some highlights -- enjoy:
And then, the moment we were all waiting for -- the swearing in, which was performed by Judge Thomas D. Raffaele.
And then Mike took the podium, addressing the audience for the first time as our Assemblyman. He's got quite a number of challenges ahead of him, but he seems confident that he's up to the job. We wish him well!
Here's the video of the swearing in. Check out Mrs. Project Woodhaven, getting into great position in front of the podium to get a terrific photo of the swearing in!
Afterwards, we made our way to the cafeteria where we enjoyed a buffet from Woodhaven's Manor Deli. That's all you need to know -- the food was outstanding!
The Miller family gathered to take a group picture -- in a few seconds they'll all look ahead, but we really like this picture. It's very natural and relaxed.
And below is the "official" picture. They were all very happy for Mike, friends and families alike.
Below, Mike poses with members of the Woodhaven Residents' Block Association. Then he spends a bit more time with family.
It was a day of celebration and one which afforded folks the opportunity to wish Mike Miller good luck.
