St. Thomas the Apostle Walk-A-Thon

This was another one of those events that we just happened to stumble upon.  We were just out for a quick errand, and our good camera was home -- but we had our little backup with us when we saw a small crowd of people walking up Woodhaven Boulevard.   What Woodhaven needs is one centralized calendar -- I suspect there's a ton of nice events going on that escapes most people's attentions.

So we pulled over and grabbed a few pics as the kids made their way up Woodhaven Boulevard.  It was an odd day in Woodhaven - the weather seemed okay very early in the morning, but by the time these pictures were taken (around 10:30) the sky was darkening.

It turned out to be St. Thomas the Apostle's Walk-A-Thon.  The kids were great, waving and mugging for the camera - definitely a nice, festive group of marchers.  And then . . . the rain began to fall.

It was a cold, steady rain but the kids seemed to be enjoying it.  Heck, if I was a kid and I had a choice between sitting in a classroom or walking in the rain, well, there would be no choice.  Give me the rain!

They had a lot of homemade posters and signs, but to be honest they were walking so fast we didn't get much of a chance to see what they were saying.  There was a banner at the front of the parade -- but we didn't get a clear shot of it.  So we hopped back in the Project Woodhavenmobile and zipped up to Park Lane South and ran into them again.  A few of them gave us some friendly waves.

We sat at the light as they passed by, but we still didn't get the money shot -- the big banner at the front.  So we circled around one more time, and waited for them around 89th and Park Lane South -- you can see them way in the distance.  The rain had subsided quite a bit by then.  If we didn't get the money shot this time, well, so be it.

Here we go -- got it!  What a nice event -- the kids were out with the parents, walking through the neighborhood.  There just aren't enough parades, as far as we're concerned.

And they continued on their way.  We assumed they were marching all the way to the Seuffert Bandshell.  And we would have gladly drove up there to see more of this, but we were late for an appointment.  But at least we got to see some of it, a nice Woodhaven parade on a rainy day.
