The MTA has begun repairs on the J Line that runs through Woodhaven and that means we can expect congestion and limited parking on certain areas of Jamaica Avenue. We posted the announcement from the MTA on our blog which begins:
This is to inform you of MTA New York City Transit’s plans for weekend construction work on the J line in Queens in Spring 2010 which will affect service between Brooklyn and Jamaica Center.
NYC Transit will be carrying out track replacement work along the J line’s elevated structure between the Woodhaven Boulevard and 104th Street Stations. This work is necessary in order to ensure safe travel conditions.
This weekend, most of the congestion was located between Woodhaven Boulevard and 97th Street, with 96th Street being completely closed to traffic. A large, tall imposing crane was set up at 96th Street (by the Cordon Bleu).
Although there was a lot of work being done, the MTA did a decent job of keeping traffic moving. In fact, the bigger inconvenience seemed to be to pedestrians who had limited places where they could cross Jamaica Avenue. In other words, they were forced to cross at the corners where they are supposed to :-)
This serves as a little primer as to what we can expect when the MTA gets around to finally repairing and painting this line. Yes, there will be traffic and there will be inconveniences, but it will be well worth it -- the J line is looking real ugly and needs a lot of work. Between the rust and the crumbling it appears that the window to repair the J line is closing and at some point, it may be too late. Let's hope they start work soon!
