Initial forecasts were calling for 18 to 24 inches. Then it got downgraded to 6 to 12 inches. And finally, as Friday evening approached we were told to expect anywhere up to 8 inches. Along Atlantic Avenue, near the Van Wyck, the sanitation department readied its' force, getting all of the snow plows out and in place (below, left).
Meanwhile, Jamaica Avenue was buzzing with folks running around, picking up lifetime supplies of milk, eggs and bread. Above, right, you see the line inside Scaturro's. But not everyone was scrambling around, afraid -- Lady Liberty and her Uncle Sams were out braving the cold, handing out advertisements for Liberty Tax Services (click here to see their Facebook page). I've seen these guys the last few weeks -- a great way to advertise their business.
So, as it turned out, we got just a dusting. Me and Mrs. Project Woodhaven drove around that evening, hoping for some snow -- but it was a bust. Or was it? Because it was such a lovely dusting -- and made for some beautiful scenery the next morning. Here's a picture taken of the cemetery behind Franklin K. Lane High School -- there's a fence at the end of Park Lane South, which makes getting this shot tricky. We had to attach the camera to a tripod, set the timer, and hold the tripod way over our heads to get this -- and it came out neat:
Here's a panorama we took at the end of Park Lane South, where you get a good view over looking Woodhaven. We weren't the only ones to drive down and take a peek judging by the tire tracks.
A real pretty shot of the steps at 76th and Park Lane South. I love the way the snow fills in the spaces between the big rocks on the top of the walls of the steps. And with all of the leaves down, you can see straight up to the Oak Ridge House.
*Sigh* Well, let's just take a wee break from reality and take a brief look back at these same steps, on a warmer -- and greener -- day back in May 2009.
If you're interested, we did a whole report on these steps -- click here for "The Steps of Forest Park - Part 1"
Back to cold reality . . . Here's a view along Park Lane South. No one's sitting on the benches on this day, though a very determined jogger was out, getting his roadwork in. Again, snow -- especially light snow -- makes for wonderful opportunities for pictures.
Here's a spot most everyone is familiar with -- Baby Carriage Lane. It's interesting how the lane closest to us is clear of any snow -- but as you work your way back into the park, away from the little bit of sun that was out, the road is white.
And just a bit further along, here's the Peace Sign" near the tennis courts. Folks might miss this during other times of the year, but on a day like this, when you have a light dusting, it stands out nicely.
Finally, we took a ride around Woodhaven, using our famous PW-Sky-Cam® -- and ended up with a pretty neat tour around town. Enjoy!
