MTA Plans for Progress in May

Day by day, the residents of Woodhaven are seeing progress, as the elevated train line along Jamaica Avenue is renovated and repainted.  And we're going to see a big leap forward this month as a final coat of paint will be applied to sections between 76th and 80th Streets.  We first saw signs of progress a few weeks ago as the first coat was applied.

There were a number of residents who looked at that reddish-brown topping and said they should leave it that color -- that's how much of an improvement came from just one coat of paint (and lots of scraping and repairing).

The work crews took great care to protect their surroundings, hanging huge canvases to keep passersby and passing cars clean.  We joked that it looked like a big ship had docked on Jamaica Avenue.

Last week, the intermediate coat was laid down -- here's a great look at how we're coming along.  Looks nice, doesn't it?

We're betting that the gray will also be popular -- we're really looking forward to seeing the final coat of hunter green.

Close inspection reveals that they are doing a terrific job scraping and repairing the structure of the El.

A nice shot showing the difference between before and after -- wow!

This isn't an easy restoration -- keep in mind that it's been sitting outside in all weathers for almost 100 years -- here's an image of our El being built, in 1916 -- that's Forest Parkway.

And here's a glimpse of what our Avenue looked like before there was an El -- that's Popp's on the left.

We'll keep an eye out for more progress and bring it to you.  76th through 78th Streets were to get the final coat this week (weather permitting).  80th Streets through Forest Parkway by the end of the weekend.  Structural work begins on Woodhaven Boulevard and Jamaica Avenue on Memorial Day Weekend.  Click here to see the schedule of Structural Work and painting for the next 2 weeks.
