As we related in an earlier update, HBO's "Bored to Death" was in town for 2 days of filming (May 12th and 13th, 2011).  We dropped by on Friday Night to hang out with the fans and spectators and see what we could see.

Note: Make sure you stay until you get to the bottom of the page for a celebrity cameo

There was a lot of equipment spread across a few blocks, much of it light equipment.  The lights below are across the street from C-Town on 75th Street, which is where a scene was being filmed.  They also spent most of the day Thursday filming inside C-Town.  In fact, C-Town was closed for a few days.

There were plenty of long trailers filled with equipment, and lots of crew to handle them.  Though it may be a temporary inconvenience when there's a film shoot in town, these shows employ a lot of New Yorkers and we should do everything we can to make their stay here in our community comfortable.  This is Bored to Death's second foray into Woodhaven (they filmed at the Carousel a few weeks back) -- there are lots more locations they could use in a film shoot.

Here's a cool little picture -- they changed the street name from Jamaica Avenue and Dexter Court to Broadway and W 130th Street.

That's Harlem -- and here's the real Broadway and W 130th Street for a comparison.  It's got an elevated train, but the road is far more wide open.  No one will know the difference (except people familiar with Woodhaven and Harlem, that is).

Note:  They removed the Historical marker for Dexter Park, but did so with the knowledge and approval of the Woodhaven Cultural and Historical Society.  It will be put back as it was.

The scene must call for showers because they kept watering the street.  You can see the hose on the ground across the street, there was also a water truck (which you'll see later).

The crew also set up a large screen across the street from C-Town (where the lights were set up).  It made for a real interesting sight -- a bright white sheet in the middle of a darkened Jamaica Avenue.

They also had a gigantic crane with powerful lights shining over the parking lot.  It will be very interesting to see the final product, won't it?

They blocked Jamaica Avenue for a while, only pausing to let buses and emergency vehicles past.  A big thank you to the 102 Precinct, the Traffic Division and the Auxiliary Cops for making such events safe to the public.  The "Richard & Son" van kept driving in and out of the parking lot, so that must play into it somehow.  Side note:  See that trash in the gutter near the van?  That was placed there by the crew.  That's right, our Jamaica Avenue wasn't dirty enough :-)

Here's a nice shot of the set -- you can see a crew member hosing down the street.

The spectators were on both sides of Jamaica Avenue -- these folks had a nice spot on the El Train steps.  There were a lot of digital cameras and cell phone cameras in use last night.

Some more spectators.  Mostly, we all just stood around, waiting for something to happen.  It was fun, though -- made a few new friends last night, that's always a good thing.

The water truck made a few passes, soaking the street and sidewalks.  There were also jets atop this truck, but we didn't see them get used.  Too bad, would have been cool.

The water does make the street look cool -- lots of nice reflections.  And as the show has a "noir" feel to it, that would be critical to the look and feel of each scene.  Really looking forward to seeing this episode.  The episode with these scenes will air in late fall (Episode 5 of Season 3). They were also filming at the Forest Park Carousel a few weeks ago -- those scenes were filmed for Episode 2 of Season 3 and will probably air in late September.

Looking away from the set -- a very empty Jamaica Avenue.  Compare the street to the shots above and you'll see how the wet street looks much better on film.  Still, I like this picture below -- very quiet looking.

Here's a cool video from our Mr. Woodhaven -- lot of good shots of the trailer and general set activity:

And here's some shots of Mr. Woodhaven with one of the stars of "Bored to Death," Mr. Ted Danson.  Here they are outside Ted's trailer on Eldert Lane:

Here's a different shot of Mr. Woodhaven and Mr. Danson -- in this one, Ted is in a butcher costume:

And one last shot of Mr. Danson on the streets of Woodhaven:

Let's wrap this up with a video someone posted on You Tube -- one crew member seems to spot the cameraman --

We'll post an announcement when the episodes shot in Woodhaven hit the air.
