Back in October we went to the Blessing of the Pets at Emanuel United Church of Christ. There we met an old friend and artist Artie Ackermann and he drew our pictures on two pumpkins --
They wintered on our porch and we kept an eye on them --
Then, over time, we watched ourselves age rapidly -- our faces wrinkling, our flesh sagging.
As we got older, our pumpkin selves had trouble holding in their water --
Each day we watched as we decayed and shrunk -- the transformation from young healthy pumpkin selves into crumbling messes --
In our final stages, our pumpkin selves began to collapse --
And finally, together at the end,our pumpkin dopplegangers sat and wondered how life sped by so quickly. "Is this all there is?" they wondered.
Even at the end, she looked beautiful -- forever my sweet little pumpkin . . .
And my pumpkin self stares out into space and wonders how long it will be before the Great Pumpkin comes to take them both away to their final resting place . . .
