At this month's meeting of the 102nd Precinct Community Council, Captain McEvoy of the 102 delivered the crime report for April 2009.  Captain McEvoy reports a "total turnaround' from this time last year when they were battling crime in a lot of areas, and that their hard work has paid off.  The biggest turnaround has been in the area of stolen vehicles - there hasn't been a stolen vehicle in the 102 in over 3 weeks, a remarkable achievement in New York City.  Robberies and violent acts of crime are down over 45% compared to 2008.  Burglaries are down 17% - and that's on top of the 17% drop in burglaries seen in 2008.

Captain McEvoy credits "getting the word out" to the drop in many areas of crime -- and by that, he means getting people to stop leaving property in areas where it serves as a tempting target.  For example, folks leaving wallets or GPS devices inside their vehicles where they are clearly visible.  In this month's report, Catpain McEvoy also detailed other statistics of note for the 102, including stolen tires (down to 2 from 15 last year) and their efforts to clean up graffiti and battling other quality of life issues, such as sound pollution.  Here is Captain McEvoy:

Many thanks to the members of the 102nd Precinct who have done an outstanding job in making our area a safer place to live.  These meetings are an ideal forum for bringing issues to their attention and during the evening, different residents spoke out on issues in their area that need extra attention.  You are encouraged to attend these meetings and make your voice heard.

The 102nd Precinct Community Council meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month.  The next meeting will be on May 19th at 8:00 PM and all are invited to attend.  It is held at the Moose Hall (across the street from the 102nd) at 87-34 118th Street.

More highlights from this month's meeting will be coming soon - a prior report detailing the 2 recent hit and run fatalities can be seen here and a brief ceremony honoring April's Cop of the Month for the 102 can be seen here
