Vintage Pics of Woodhaven - Vol. 2
Here's another batch of vintage pics of Woodhaven, again courtesy of Joe Virgona. First up, a picture of 89th Street -- or as it was known back then, Ocean View Avenue.
Compare the above pic of 89th Street to a contemporary pic (below) -- we think this is the same stretch, North side of the Avenue, looking towards Forest Park:
Next up is another clipping from an old Leader-Observer -- the entrance to Dexter Park. It was originally a racetrack and later became the home of "The Brooklyn Royal Giants" -- a team in the "Negro Leagues." The first night baseball game was played here, in Woodhaven, and many famous athletes played here.
Dexter Park was demolished in the 1950's to make way for housing. There is a sign, put up by the Woodhaven Cultural & Historical Society, indicating where it stood (right near Franklin K. Lane).
The picture below shows a church on 80th Street . . .
And the same church, as it appears today, from roughly the same angle -- there have been many changes, but you can see some of the design has lasted throughout the years.
And finally, a home on 84th Street. Old pictures like this are wonderful -- and it's the old woman in the apron which gives it an added special touch. Does anyone recognize the house? We looked up and down 84th Street but didn't see anything that looked like this. If you know the address of this home, drop us a line.
