Each month, at the 102nd Precinct Community Council meeting, one or more officers from the 102 is recognized for their contributions. This months meeting took place on Tuesday, June 16th and this month's honorees were Police Officers Joseph Martin and Michael Prioleau for their part in an arrest that Captain Charles McEvoy described as "phenomenal." On the afternoon of Friday June 5th, three males walked into a cell phone store on 101st Avenue, brandishing a gun, announcing their intent to commit a robbery. They ended up grabbing 22 cell phones and over $1000 worth of calling cards before fleeing into the rain down 113th Street.
Police Officers Martin and Prioleau searched the area, but came up empty. However, they noticed that a residence on 113th Street had a video camera positioned in the window. They asked the owner of that camera if it had been recording and, as luck would have it -- it was. Upon reviewing the recoding, Officers Martin and Prioleau noticed that the 3 individuals had entered a nearby home. They immediately called for backup and entered the property from the rear, where they apprehended one individual trying to flee. They then entered the home and found the three individuals hiding in a room, with the 22 cell phones, $1000 worth of calling cards, and the gun used in the robbery. The three men were apprehended and are still incarcerated with a bail of $75,000.
And now, as Paul Harvey would say, here's the rest of the story. One of the Sergeants in the Detective Squad recognized one of the three men as a suspect from a robbery of a cell phone store back in April. The victims of that crime were brought in, picked him out of a lineup, and two robberies were closed out. As Captain McEvoy said, it was a display of "fantastic teamwork all around." Thanks to all the members of the 102nd Precinct for the fantastic work they do -- day in, day out.
The 102nd Precinct Community Council meets on the 3rd Tuesday of every month. However, they do not meet in the summer months -- so the next meeting will be on September 15th at 8:00 PM and all are invited to attend. It is held at the Moose Hall (across the street from the 102nd) at 87-34 118th Street. Note: June's special guest, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, was a no-show -- he has promised to attend the September meeting.
